Since we came to New York at the end of the year 2000, we’ve been collecting the information that has been available in art galleries, museums, and other cultural events that we've visited—press releases, brochures, invitations, posters, postcards, ads, etc. This archive started as a kind of a diary, a registry of our life here, of what we see and absorb, of what motivates and inspires us.
Thanks to a comment by Guatemalan curator Rosina Cazali, we started to also see the relation the archive has with themes that interest us, and that both of us have worked on independently in other art projects: memory, nostalgia, the passage of time, documentation of daily activities, collections, etc.
But it was until we were invited to the Paiz 2012 Biennial in Guatemala, with the theme “Convivir/Compartir” (“Coexist/Share”), that we were inspired to make this an art project, sharing all this material with the general public. As we started scanning the files we noticed that some artists or events have inspired or influenced us more than others, so we decided to create a “Favorites” category.
For the Guatemala from 33,000 km: Contemporary Art, 1960–Present exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, CA, from September 17 to December 17, 2017, almost half of the archive has been scanned. But “ARTchivo” will keep on growing and will be updated constantly.

Desde que venimos a Nueva York a finales del 2000 hemos coleccionado información que ha estado disponible en galerías de arte, museos y otros eventos culturales que hemos visitado—comunicados de prensa, folletos, invitaciones, afiches, postales, anuncios, etc. Este archivo comenzó como una especie de diario, un registro de nuestra vida acá, de lo que vemos y absorbemos, de lo que nos motiva e inspira.
Gracias a un comentario de Rosina Cazali, curadora guatemalteca, comenzamos a ver además su relación con temas que nos interesan y que ambos trabajamos independientemente en otras obras: la memoria, la nostalgia, el paso del tiempo, la documentación de actividades diarias, las colecciones, etc.
Sin embargo, no fue hasta que fuimos invitados a la Bienal Paiz 2012 en Guatemala, con el tema de “Convivir/Compartir”, que nos inspiró a convertir este archivo en un proyecto de arte, y que nos propusimos compartir este material con el público general. Cuando comenzamos el proceso de digitalización del archivo nos dimos cuenta que hay algunos eventos o artistas que nos han inspirado o influenciado más que otros, por lo que decidimos crear una categoría especial de “Favoritos”.
Para la exhibición Guatemala from 33,000 km: Contemporary Art, 1960–Present en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Santa Barbara, CA, de septiembre 17 a diciembre 17, 2017, casi la mitad del archivo ha sido digitalizado. Pero “ARTchivo” seguirá creciendo y actualizándose constantemente.
“ARTchivo” es más que una forma de registrar nuestras experiencias culturales; es nuestra forma de ver la vida, y de irla documentando, acaparando, atesorando.
